What is sports betting and how does it work?
Sports betting can easily be defined as one of the most widely-spread forms of gambling. In general terms, sports betting is placing a wager, commonly referred to as a bet, on the outcome of a particular sports event.
Types of bets:
STRAIGHT BETS (most basic type of bet) is a type of wager in which you bet on a single game that carries a point spread, a total or a money line. All you need to do to win a straight bet is to correctly wager on the team that covers the spread, or if the two teams cover the over or under.
TOTAL LINE BETS (second-most popular) single wager on whether or not the combined goal, point or run total of a single game will be over or under what the oddsmaker sets it at before the event. When placing a total wager, all the bettor is concerned with is the combined score of each team at the end of the game.
MONEY LINE BETS are when you make a money line bet, you are picking a team to win straight-up without any point spread. The risk involved is the amount you have to wager to pick the favorite verse the amount you stand to make if you pick the underdog. These types of bets are released for all the major sports, but they primarily come into play for baseball and hockey. For example; if the Dodgers are favored at home against the Giants the money line might read San Francisco (+120) vs. Los Angeles (-135). You would stand to make $120 on a $100 bet on the Giants if they win and you would have to risk $135 to win $100 on a Dodgers’ victory.
OVER/UNDER is a bet where you have to correctly predict the combined score of both teams. You have to pick if the total score will be lower or higher than the number set by oddsmakers – the people at betting sites who set the lines and odds. For example, let’s take a Philadelphia Eagles vs Dallas Cowboys game with the total set at 48.5 points. As a bettor, you would select the OVER if you believe the game’s final combined score will be 49 points or more. You would select the UNDER if you believe it will be 48 points or less.
